Old But Not Odd: Samaritan Spirit Behind Kashmir's Traditional Apple Packing | Free Press Kashmir

In recent years, apple farmers in Kashmir have witnessed a shift in packaging use. The rising costs of traditional wooden boxes have pushed apple farmers to pack their produce into cardboard boxes. FPK spoke to farmers across Kashmir who still continue to use traditional wooden boxes to secure the livelihoods of thousands of people who make these boxes and “keep the business running".

Shattered Peace | Pahalgam Attack Casts a Pall of Gloom Across Kashmir

IMPORTANT UPDATE: The death toll has been updated to 28 as of April 25, 2025, and so far, only one foreigner has been confirmed dead. In this ground report for Frontline, Gowhar Geelani travels through the Kashmir Valley to document the aftermath of the devastating civilian massacre in Baisaran, Pahalgam. On April 22, 2025, armed militants opened fire on a group of tourists, killing over two dozen people. The attack has left the region in mourning, united by sorrow, fear, and a resilient hope for peace. Context: Pahalgam, often referred to as Kashmir’s “mini-Switzerland”, is a top tourist destination. The massacre took place during peak holiday season, shattering the region’s fragile sense of normalcy. The attack drew sharp condemnation from political, religious, and civil society leaders, and sparked shutdowns, protests, and vigils across the Valley. Questions around security, governance, and the risks of selling “normalcy” as narrative have resurfaced with renewed urgency.

Uri: The story after Pahalgam

In this ground report for Frontline, Gowhar Geelani travels through the conflict-ravaged villages of north Kashmir near the Line of Control (LoC), documenting the destruction, fear, and fragile calm that followed intense cross-border shelling between India and Pakistan in early May 2025. What began as a peaceful day in Uri turned into a nightmare—residential homes reduced to rubble, families displaced, and civilians caught in the terrifying exchange of fire. Context: In the first week of May, escalating hostilities between India and Pakistan brought devastation to frontier villages in Baramulla and Uri. As mortars rained down, civilians fled their homes in panic, many seeking shelter in nearby towns. The violence left over two dozen people dead across north Kashmir and Jammu, including women, children, and public officials. While the ceasefire brought temporary relief, fear still looms large among residents who have long lived at the mercy of geopolitical tensions.

"In pictures: Kashmiri’s Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations Srinagar: Barring Srinagar, where the historic Jamia Masjid remained closed for Eid-ul-Fitr prayers for the 5th consecutive year, prayers were offered across Jammu and Kashmir and the festival was marked by traditional fervour and gaiety. Thousands of people had gathered to offer prayers at various locations including Dargah Hazratbal Shrine, Aali Masjid Downtown, Dast-e-Geer Sahib Shrine, and Khanqah-e-Maula, among others. A large congregation of devotees gathered at the iconic Hazratbal Shrine on the banks of Dal Lake in Kashmir to offer prayers, including former chief ministers of the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir state – Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah, and Mehbooba Mufti."
